There is a considerable debate about business lists in terms of only selecting named people.   Some believe that named lists work far better than lists which carry a generic title (such as “The Marketing Director”).   The issues are complicated – but are affected by the fact that virtually all named selections are fairly patchy.   For example there might be 20,000 firms with a Personnel Director, but only 5,000 of those firms have given out the name of this director to the people who build mailing lists.   Since most people do believe (often without any real evidence) that named lists work better than generic title lists, these 5,000 firms get bombarded with personnel director adverts, while the 15,000 firms who have personnel directors, but whose names don’t appear on mailing lists, get very little.  Those firms that mail by generic title reach these 15,000 and so can get much higher response rates overall.
